Breath, technique and the living shape of a raga

Two skills, one journey

Breath becomes music through technique.

Carnatic flute develops two areas together: instrument technique through tone, breath, embouchure, fingering and articulation, and musicianship through shruti, raga, tala, repertoire and Manodharma.

We begin with choosing and positioning the flute, producing a clear sound and controlling airflow, then progress through exercises, compositions, improvisation and concert-oriented playing.

More than the right notes

Build a complete flautist.

Training connects breath, sound, technique, listening and expression so progress carries beyond a single composition.

01

Tone + Embouchure

Develop a clear, stable and expressive sound without force or excess air.

02

Breath

Plan and manage airflow so musical phrases feel complete rather than interrupted.

03

Fingering + Gamakas

Build accuracy, speed and ornamentation through coordinated fingers and airflow.

04

Shruti + Laya

Maintain pitch while developing rhythmic independence across exercises and repertoire.

05

Raga + Repertoire

Move from scales into phrases, compositions and the melodic behaviour of each raga.

06

Manodharma + Performance

Create within Carnatic grammar and present music with confidence and stamina.

For kids

The right flute makes progress comfortable.

Children build listening, breath awareness, coordination, rhythm and confidence. A trainer can recommend a shorter or higher-pitched flute when a standard instrument is too long for the child’s hands.

For adults

You can begin from scratch.

Begin from scratch, return after a break or pursue serious performance skills. Previous Carnatic vocal training may help, but it is never required.

Student stories

What progress feels like.

Reflections from Carnatic flute learners and families at different stages of the journey.

“The sound is finally clean instead of airy.”

I could get notes out of the flute before, but I was always running out of breath and the sound felt thin. Working on the blowing angle and where I breathe has made practice much less frustrating.

Adult Beginner · Carnatic Flute

“She now knows what to fix when a note does not come out properly.”

My daughter used to keep blowing harder whenever a note sounded wrong. Her trainer helped her slow down, cover the holes properly and listen to the tone. She is much more patient with the instrument now.

Parent of a Beginner Flute Student

“My Varnams have started sounding like music, not just the notation.”

I already knew a few Varnams when I joined, but I was playing most of the notes very straight. Working on Gamakas, finger movement and breath points has made the raga phrases sound much more natural.
