Build comfortable technique, note reading, basic harmony and the coordination to play melody and accompaniment together.

Repertoire direction

Recognisable contemporary songs, short reading pieces, a rhythm-focused piece, an expressive slow piece and a student-choice song adapted to current ability.

On this track

  • Keyboard layout, landmark notes, posture, hand shape, finger numbers and relaxed touch
  • Treble and bass clef foundations, simple sight-reading, pulse, rests and 4/4, 3/4 and 6/8 time
  • Five-finger patterns, major and minor scale foundations, pentatonics and simple arpeggios
  • Major and minor triads, primary chords, first inversions and common four-chord progressions
  • Block, broken and arpeggiated chords with pop, ballad, waltz and simple rock accompaniment
  • Voices, sustain, rhythm styles, intros, fills, endings, split, layer and responsible transpose use

Your trainer selects music around your age, level, interests and goals. Each song is adapted to develop a purposeful mix of technique, rhythm, harmony, reading, sound choice and performance.

Your instrument setup

A full-size-key electronic keyboard is recommended. Beginners can start on a suitable entry-level model, while a 61-key touch-sensitive keyboard with sustain-pedal support becomes increasingly useful as skills develop.

Optional exam pathway

Build the musician first. Add the syllabus when ready.

The curriculum supports Trinity College London Electronic Keyboard and Rock & Pop Keyboards, RSL Awards Keys and London College of Music Electronic Keyboard. Focused preparation follows the current syllabus and remains separate from the core Popular Course pathway.
